Using Oxymorons

An oxymoron is a combination of words that contradict each other, an expression that contains words with opposite meanings.

Usually they are used to emphasize something. We use them being aware that they are oxymorons, but we also use them or common expressions or descriptions. Here we go, a list with my favorite ones:

act naturally
almost ready
authentic replica
auto pilot
bad luck
barely dressed
bass guitar
beyond infinity
big detail
blurry vision
brief speech
business casual
cafeteria food
calculated risk
calm storm
civil war

How to search for bigger/better versions of images that you already have

If you already have an image on your computer and you want to find information about it, a bigger size or perhaps where on the web has been distributed before, reverse image search is what you wish for.

I do not know why this type of search is not famous yet since it’s available for many years now.

How do you use it? Most image search engines give you the option to include the url of a image or to upload image from your computer. Next step: press search and results pop up. My favorites:

  • http://www.tineye.com – I mostly use it because results are clean. Simply upload the image you are searching for and press search.
  • http://images.google.com – the option of reverse image search is always available for every Google image search. Put mouse over the little photo camera symbol that you can see on the right side of the search box and you will see the option “Search by Imagine”. From here – same steps: paste link of the imagine you are searching for or upload and wait for the results.
With a search on the key words: reverse image search you can find more platforms that offer you related results. Some can track the location of an imagine or can provide you similar images (patterns and colors).

It must be extremely hard to be a teacher

And I am not only talking about the teachers that have to motivate 8 years old children to learn mathematics.
I am talking about all teachers. They have to take a person from point A to point Z (or until wherever the student goes) and then start again, facing the same problems, talking the same steps, over and over again with different people.
These days I am having German classes and I am one of the “slow kids in the class”. My poor teacher, how can she stand me? Is my teacher judging me for not putting too much effort into it?
I really wonder how people can do this job all their life, how they can be so dedicated and patient.

I think you will like Romania

Amazing photos of the Black Sea have been share on Facebook by Dan Cristian Mihailescu a few days ago. Some of them are below, just to convince you to search the album The Cold And Steaming Black Sea 2012.

Decent Carnival Costume

German Carnival is getting closer and closer. In Bonn the peak will be reached on February 16 – 22. So… yesterday I was searching online for a decent carnival costume and I realized that is pretty hard to find one, unless you want to go for a witch or a countess. And sometimes even those ones are not appropriate to wear.

So, I made some extra searches that I would like to share them.

Food experience in Milan

I did zero research before going to Milan and that cost me a lot of extra euros.

First evening I was lucky to end up in a pizzeria with huge pizza at very good prices. However in the next 3 days I was mostly frustrated because of the bad food and high prices.

Most of the places I have tried were located near the city center.

You have to pay a tax for the chair you use in the restaurant or coffee. This was hilarious. In some other place 3 extra euros were added to the bill because the lady that served the food walked 10 steps to bring it to our table.

Supermarket prices were also weird and high. I was amazed with every store and I felt cheap as hell.

I really have no problem with paying good money for good food, but I had the bad luck of the student that didn’t do his homework and ended up with crappy food on my plate most of the times.

I find most of the prices ridiculous, but yet maybe it’s just me being cheap.

What I have learned from my work experience

I am working for about 10 years now: part time, project based, full time… and except the professional skills I have gathered I have also learned some additional things that will always serve my happiness:

  • choose a job that you like. If you don’t find it, search again and again and again or just be easier to please
  • always help you colleagues when they need you. We are all busy at work, that is why we are receiving a salary. We all have our extremely crazy days, weeks, our normal weeks and our thank you god, it’s Christmas time days. Be nice and helpful.
  • never take holidays after a big project. Follow up takes longer than 2 weeks and most probably you will have to work during your holiday. Of course, you also have the option of just not giving a damn and then you will just be the guy that didn’t care
  • if an email does not solve a problem, a phone call or a face-to-face meeting might be more efficient
  • work hard because you are also working for yourself not only for your employer. It makes you sleep happier and easier
  • make friends. You spend a 3rd of your life with your work colleagues, life will be better if you will also see your friends during that time
  • never stop learning. School ends when you are in your 20s, the learning process should never end
  • use bullet points. They are easy to follow :)
